Tyres Guide UK – Types, Safety, Sizes, Maintenance and Buying Tips

In the UK, your tyres decide how well your car steers, grips and stops. Get them wron,g and every journey becomes gamble.

Main tyre types

  • Most cars run on summer tyres. They suit typical UK weather, with good wet and dry grip in mild temperatures.
  • Winter tyres use a softer compound and deeper tread, ideal for regular frost, slush and snow.
  • All season tyres sit in the middle. One set all year, good for mixed weather if you do not want to swap twice a year.
  • Some cars use run flat tyres, designed to support the car for a short distance after a puncture, so you can reach a safe place or a fitter.

Tyre safety basics

The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tread. Below that, you risk fines, points and long stopping distances in the wet.

Watch for cuts, bulges and exposed cords. Any of those can lead to sudden failure.

Check all four tyres, not just the ones you see when you walk up to the car. Drivers in Kent can explore tyre fitting and replacement options on our tyres Maidstone page.

Understanding tyre sizes

A marking like 205 55 R16 91V tells you the tyre width, sidewall height, construction, wheel size, load index and speed rating. Always match the size and, at a minimum, the load and speed ratings shown in your handbook or door sticker.

Why Tyres Matter

Tyres are the only contact point between your vehicle and the road. When they are in good condition, you get stable grip, responsive braking, and better control in different weather conditions. Poor tyre condition increases risks of skidding, blowouts, uneven wear, and reduced fuel economy.

This page covers everything a driver should know to stay safe and compliant while extending tyre life.
